The Warehouse Tee

The Warehouse, in La Crosse, Wisconsin was an historic, all-ages, alcohol-free music venue that served as a foundational hub for the local underground punk, metal, hardcore, and alternative music culture for more than three decades.

What made The Warehouse special was its identity as a strictly all-ages, drug and alcohol-free venue, something unusually rare in the U.S. music scene. By the mid-1990s, it evolved from a dance club into a full-fledged live music venue and became a crucial stop for touring underground bands traveling between larger Midwest cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. Because La Crosse sat on a strategic touring route, many rising bands such as Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Nine Inch Nails, and Everclear played The Warehouse before they became famous.

Over its run, The Warehouse hosted 8,000–12,000+ performances, featuring everyone from local DIY acts to national touring artists often in intimate rooms packed with teenagers discovering underground music for the first time. Many former attendees remember the venue’s famous 49 stairs, brutal summer heat, loud sound system, and intense sense of community. 

For many Wisconsin kids in the 1990s and 2000s, The Warehouse was more than a concert venue, It gave young people a place to belong outside bar culture and became one of the Midwest’s most important DIY music spaces. Its nonprofit mission was often described as “keeping kids off the streets and into the music.”  The venue permanently closed in 2023.
